چکیده

Advancements in molecular biology have led to a greater understanding of the individual proteins responsible for generating cerebral edema. In large part, the study of cerebral edema is the study of maladaptive ion transport. Following acute CNS injury, cells of the neurovascular unit, particularly brain endothelial cells and astrocytes, undergo a program of pre- and post-transcriptional changes in the activity of ion channels and transporters. These changes can result in maladaptive ion transport and the generation of abnormal osmotic forces that, ultimately, manifest as cerebral edema. This review discusses past models and current knowledge regarding the molecular and cellular pathophysiology of cerebral edema.

Functionalized fullerene materials (fullerol nanoparticles) reduce brain injuries during cerebral ischemia-reperfusion in rat

Aim: Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of ischemic stroke. Since water-solublefullerene derivatives act as the potent scavenger of oxygen free radicals in biological systems, we aimedto investigate the possible protective effects of fullerol nanoparticles on brain infarction and edema intransient model of focal cerebral ischemia in rat.Materials & Methods: Experiment ...

Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis Masquerading as High Altitude Cerebral Edema at Extreme Altitude

Introduction: Extreme altitude travel has gained popularity globally for adventurous, scientific, and military endeavors. Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) at extreme altitude is a rare, covert, and emergent condition requiring immediate intervention. Case Presentation: A case of CVST masqueraded as high altitude cerebral edema (HACE) at 6700 m/22000 ft i...

Candesartan Attenuates Ischemic Brain Edema and Protects the Blood–Brain Barrier Integrity from Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Rats

Background: Angiotensin II (Ang II) has an important role on cerebral microcirculation however, its direct roles in terms of ischemic brain edema need to be clarified. This study evaluated the role of central Ang II by using candesartan, as an AT1 receptor blocker, in the brain edema formation and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption caused by ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injuries in rat. Methods...

CEREBRAL EDEMA: A RARE COMPLICATION IN GALACTOSEMIA

A 34 day-old girl infant was admitted for poor feeding and cholestasis. She had a bulging fontanelle, with no evidence of intracranial infection or hemorrhage. Investigations demonstrated that she had galactosemia. Computed tomographic scans demonstrated the presence of diffuse cerebral edema. After treatment the edema resolved.

Contribution of Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS) Activity in Blood-Brain Barrier Disruption and Edema after Acute Ischemia/ Reperfusion in Aortic Coarctation-Induced Hypertensive Rats

Background: Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity is increased during hypertension and cerebral ischemia. NOS inactivation reduces stroke-induced cerebral injuries, but little is known about its role in blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption and cerebral edema formation during stroke in acute hypertension. Here, we investigated the role of NOS inhibition in progression of edema formation and BBB d...
